10 Baby Products I Regret Buying (and What Worked Better)

As a new mom, it's easy to get swept up in the excitement of buying adorable baby items. However, not all purchases end up being practical or necessary. Here are ten baby products I regret buying, why they turned out to be less than useful, and what I found worked better instead.

1. Too Many Shoes

Baby shoes are undeniably cute, but they’re also impractical. Babies don't need shoes until they start walking, and even then, soft-soled shoes are best. Most of the shoes I bought never got worn.

What Worked Better: Robeez Soft Soles - These soft, flexible shoes are perfect for when babies start to explore.

2. Too Many Cute Outfits

While it’s tempting to dress your baby in adorable outfits, I found that soft, comfortable footies and onesies were much more practical. Babies spend most of their time sleeping, so comfort is key. I ended up with many cute outfits that were either uncomfortable for my baby or too fussy to put on regularly.

What Worked Better: Simple Joys by Carter's Unisex Babies' 3-Pack Neutral Sleep and Play - Comfortable and easy to change, these footed onesies were perfect for everyday wear.

3. Excessive Baby Blankets

I was gifted and bought way too many baby blankets. While a few are handy, I found myself with a surplus that I simply didn’t need. Babies typically use one or two blankets regularly, and the rest just took up space. Most of the blankets I was gifted, was too small to be used as a swaddle.

What Worked Better: Aden + Anais Classic Swaddle Blanket - Versatile and breathable, these swaddles are perfect for multiple uses.

4. Baby Swing

A baby swing seemed like a great way to soothe my baby, but it ended up being used far less than I expected. My baby preferred being held or using a simple bouncer.

What Worked Better: Baby Delight Alpine Deluxe Portable Bouncer - This bouncer is lightweight, portable, and soothing for the baby.

5. Newborn Bows

Newborn bows are adorable, but they were often uncomfortable for my baby and rarely stayed on. I found that they were more of a hassle than they were worth. I received so many bows at my baby shower that were very tight (even when my baby was just a few days old!). I would that headbands with the nylon wrap were much more comfortable for my daughter.

What Worked Better: YanJie Baby Girls Nylon Headbands Newborn Bows - These headbands are soft, stretchy, and comfortable, making them a better choice for accessorizing.

6. Wipe Warmer

While the idea of warm wipes sounds nice, my baby never seemed to mind room temperature wipes. The wipe warmer dried out the wipes quickly and became another unnecessary item cluttering the nursery.

What Worked Better: WaterWipes Unscented Baby Wipes - Gentle and effective, these wipes are perfect at room temperature.

7. Baby Food Maker

A regular blender or food processor works just as well for making baby food. The baby food maker I bought was a single-use gadget that took up counter space and didn’t offer any significant advantage over my existing kitchen appliances.

What Worked Better: Ninja Professional Countertop Blender - Versatile and powerful, this blender can make smoothies and baby food alike.

8. Overly Expensive Diaper Bag

I splurged on a high-end diaper bag, but soon realized that any spacious, durable bag would do. In fact, a simple backpack often proved to be more practical and comfortable.

What Worked Better: RUVALINO Diaper Bag Backpack - Spacious, organized, and much more affordable.

9. Moses Bassinet

While Moses baskets look adorable and are highly portable, but I quickly returned it after realizing it was just for the looks. They also lack some of the functionality and features that more practical bassinets offer.

What Worked Better: HALO Bassinest Swivel Sleeper - This bassinet offers great functionality with its swivel feature, making nighttime feedings and check-ins more convenient.

10. Multiple Baby Carriers

I bought several different baby carriers thinking I needed different types for different occasions. However, I found that one high-quality, versatile carrier was more than sufficient.

What Worked Better: Ergobaby Omni 360 All-Position Baby Carrier - This carrier is comfortable, versatile, and can be used from newborn to toddler, covering all my needs with one product.

When it comes to baby products, less is often more. Focusing on essentials and avoiding the temptation of every cute item can save you money, space, and effort. I hope my experiences help you make more practical choices for your little one, mama!
