As you eagerly await the arrival of your little one, it's easy to get caught up in nursery decor and baby gear. However, there are a few often-overlooked essentials that can make those early days with your newborn smoother and more comfortable. Before I had my baby, I was very nervous of things I would forget to do! Let's dive into five things you might have forgotten to prepare for before your baby's arrival.

1. Newborn-Sized Clothes

When it comes to baby clothes, it's tempting to stock up on adorable outfits in 0-3 months sizes. However, many newborns are smaller than expected, and these larger sizes can be too big initially. Before my first baby, I didn't even realize I needed smaller than 0-3M clothing! Make sure to have a few sets of newborn-sized clothes on hand, maybe even preemie if your baby is expected to be small! I love these newborn footies, to ensure a perfect fit from day one.

2. Comfortable Postpartum Clothing

While you're busy picking out cute baby clothes, don't forget about your own comfort postpartum. You'll want loose, comfortable clothing that accommodates your changing body and makes breastfeeding or recovering from a C-section easier. Consider investing in a few sets of cozy loungewear or nursing-friendly tops, like this postpartum nursing friendly top, to help you feel relaxed and supported during those early weeks.

3. Breast Pump and Accessories

If you plan to breastfeed, having a breast pump ready before baby arrives is essential. Whether it's for establishing milk supply, occasional pumping, or returning to work, a reliable pump like the Medela Pump in Style can be a lifesaver. Don't forget to also stock up on breast milk storage bags, spare pump parts, and a hands-free pumping bra to streamline your pumping experience.

4. Diapering Essentials

While diapers and wipes are obvious necessities, there are a few diapering essentials that can be overlooked. Consider adding diaper rash cream (even a few different kinds incase your baby reacts to one), diaper pail liners, and a portable changing pad to your baby registry or shopping list. These items will come in handy for quick diaper changes at home or on the go.

5. Baby Medicine Kit

It's always wise to have a baby medicine kit prepared before your little one arrives. Include items such as infant acetaminophen (if recommended by your pediatrician), a digital thermometer, nasal aspirator, and baby nail clippers. I can't tell you how many times I have used my medicine kit and how helpful it has been. I have added to my kit as my daughter has gotten older- including teething oil and gripe water. Having these essentials readily available can provide peace of mind and comfort when caring for your baby.

As you count down the days to meeting your baby, taking care of these often-forgotten essentials can help you feel more prepared for the journey ahead. Remember, every parent's experience is unique, and being flexible and patient with yourself is very helpful. Cherish these moments as you prepare to welcome your little one into the world!
